Whether you are a beginner runner, a weekend warrior, or an avid athlete, the key to improvement is to stress the body, then adapt to that stress. Most runners race or have more intense training days on Saturday or Sunday. In order to reap the benefits of this training, you need to recover from it. Even if you do not experience fatigue or soreness, overtraining or successive workouts that are intense or high volume can continually break down the body and reduce speed and fitness.

The actual reason for muscle soreness is unknown, but is theorized that is caused by a breakdown of muscle fibers. Recovery days are necessary in order to let the body repair these microtears and come back stronger than before the workout. Looking at training from this perspective, it is easy to see that recovery days are actually just as important as hard workouts.

As a pioneer, Aerobics First is offering a Recovery Run on Monday evenings at 6 p.m. Runs are lead by Dawn Moxsom (certified fitness coach) and Pam Purcell (holistic nutritionist). There are two options: a 5 km run or a 30 minute walk and/or jog.

Sessions begin with Movement Activation Drills, Recovery Run/Walk, Recovery Drink and Nutritional Tips, and Flexibility Drills. Approximate 1 hour and 15 minute duration.

To participate, you will need running shoes, appropriate clothing for the elements, yoga mat and a willingness to learn and have fun!
